The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (Two-Disc Special Edition) (2010) Review

I have to say I normally don't review movies. I usually try to stick with books (haha hence my name) I also tend not to see movies that were based on books, they are never right ie: Eragon, Blood and Chocolate and yes even the Harry Potters movies were missing tons of sides stories that were in the books. I saw Twilight the day it came out and was both relieved that it was so close to the book, and frustrated because like the book it lacked action. Only the last five minutes had any fighting. The same was true in New Moon, while it followed the book closely it was only the last 10 minutes where Edward fought with the Volturi that were action packed. I have to say I really liked Eclipse. I found that with all of Stepenie Meyer's books (especially Breaking Dawn) there was a huge build up towards the battle scenes, then it just fell apart. Yes it's for a younger age group, but sometimes a little more fighting and action is good. Eclipse delivered good action through out the movie, especially the 'big battle' I found myself wishing that the screen writers would have put this much effort into the first two with the action. David Slade, the director, also did Hard Candy (amazing movie) and 30 Days of Night. I think it was brilliant to bring him in on the project and hope he stays for Breaking Dawn.
I also am glad to say that Kristen Stewert has better facial expressions in this movie. She doesn't look like her face is frozen in only two expressions. Edward also delivers more side comments with good comedic timing. Jacob is hurt in this movie, but the interaction between all three is much less forced and more natural than the first two movies. It is without a doubt the best of the bunch. I won't bog down this review with the plot, because obviously 99% of the people going to Eclipse have read the book at least twice. I can say though that unlike the other two movies, I actually found myself wondering what happens next, and looking forward to how Bella and Edward (and yes Jacob) would react. I'd say if you've been on the fence about the other two movies go see this one, if you hated the first two movies, this one is infinitely better and if you loved the first two movies, I can only say you will love this one even more.

Aroma AWK-290BD 6-Cup Digital Electric Water Kettle Review

I have tried a few kettles, and this is by far the best. It is very impressive,
The water gauge is fantastic.
The units are in cups (not fluid ounces/liters) which is much more meaningful for making drinks.
It also changes colors based on water temp. Green, light blue, dark blue, purple, red. It also has the inbetween colors as they mix together. The image does not show green though, and it would seem more logical or me if it went blue to red.
The handle is a great quality, sturdy, not a slippery plastic, no horible rough edges, and it stays solid when you squeeze it. The buttons are nice individual buttons with a firm click to them.
You can press the power switch followed by quick boil to heat straight to boiling point. Upon boil, the power turns off (and it doesn't wait too long either which is good), the light turns out, and it bleeps to alert you it has finished.
Alternatively, you can press power followed by the keep warm button, which lets you toggle through different temperatures. When it reaches that temperature it will hold it for 20 minutes. Its a pity you cant select a temperature and then have it go off without holding, but you can always turn it off yourself by re-hitting power.
Whenever the kettle is on its base, it tells you the temperature of the water on the LED. So you can see it heating up and cooling down, but the gauge light only illuminates whilst heating.
This kettle does not alter the taste of the water, heats faster than other 2000w kettles, and has a convenient to remove filter,
If I had to improve this kettle, I would
1) Let the user toggle between Celsius and Fahrenheit. To me, boiling point is 100 Celsius not 212 Fahrenheit.
2) Have an option where the kettle can reach a certain temperature and then turn off
3) Have the lid pop-up by a button on the handle.
4) Have cold start with a blue-colored gauge, not green
Overall I am VERY impressed by this kettle.

Last Chance Harvey (2008) Review

Watching "Last Chance Harvey," I began to think about other such films and realized that I usually referred to them in my reviews as classic romantic comedies. But what exactly do I mean when I say that? In all likelihood, I mean that readers should go easy on the film because we're used to those movies following a very specific formula, and never mind the fact that they're contrived and cliché. I could very well call "Last Chance Harvey" a classic romantic comedy, because goodness knows it adheres to a tried and true structure. In spite of that, this is the one romantic comedy of 2008 that works the best, in large part because of stars Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson; whereas other filmmakers would cast young, energetic actors in a story about sex, writer/director Joel Hopkins has cast two older actors in a story is about love. Because they're more experienced, they actually bring something to the table. They seem genuine as people.
But more importantly, they have chemistry, not necessarily as lovers but definitely as companions. In other words, it seems plausible that such people could meet in real life and fall in love. Hoffman plays Harvey Shine, a jingle writer from New York who always wanted to be a jazz pianist. It was easy for me to empathize with him, a somber, soft-spoken man who always feels ignored in a large crowd. Maybe there's a part of him that wanted it that way; he's been known to embarrass himself and those closest to him, so at a certain point, it's better to just stay out of the way. He openly admits that he wasn't the greatest father or husband, and while there's no hostility between him or his daughter and ex-wife, there is a quiet yet prominent sense of disappointment on all accounts. And now, no one at his music company seems to be taking him seriously. More to the point, he's on the verge of losing his job.
When Harvey flies to London to attend his daughter's wedding, he meets a Heathrow employee named Kate Walker (Thompson), who, as it turns out, is stuck in her own emotional rut. She says she would like nothing more than to meet someone and start a relationship, but since she's been let down so many times, she may be getting used to it. Later on in the film, she admits that being disappointed is more comfortable that being hurt. Much like Harvey, she also feels ignored in crowds, as when she's on a blind date that starts off well but ends up as a social gathering that leaves her off in the sidelines. Her only social outlets are her coworkers and her mother (Eileen Atkins), an interesting character herself; she calls Kate constantly, pretty much to the point of insanity, and she seems to think her Polish next-door neighbor is a mass murderer who burns his victims in a large barbecue shed.
Harvey and Kate spend a wonderful afternoon together, and this is despite the fact that they don't know very much about each other. We don't know if a love is developing at this point, but it's clear that a friendship is. While a bit quiet and reserved, Harvey is kind towards Kate, and he seems genuinely interested in what she has to say. Kate is willing to go along with it, although her nervous smiles and hesitant laughter suggest that she has absolutely no idea why any of this is happening. From out of nowhere comes a charming American man, and even though he has a lot of emotional baggage, there's the sense that she's interested in helping him deal with it. Most likely, that's because she has baggage of her own; after convincing her to join him at his daughter's wedding reception, there comes a point when she feels exactly the same as she did the night of her blind date. It's up to Harvey to make her feel like she can be a part of the crowd.
There are some interesting moments between Harvey and his daughter, Susan (Liane Balaban). Even though they love each other in the strictest sense, they are more good friends than they are father and daughter, which is why she wants her stepfather, Brian (James Brolin), to give her away at the wedding. Harvey is understandably hurt, but he can't stay mad at Brian forever; after all, he did take over for Harvey when his marriage failed, giving Susan the stability and attention she needed. This would be a tiresome story were Brian made to be vindictive and hostile. Thankfully, he isn't--he's decent and accommodating, a fact Harvey most likely has trouble accepting. There are few things worse than disliking someone without having a reason.
So yes, I guess I can call "Last Chance Harvey" a classic romantic comedy. But that doesn't automatically make it a bad movie. What really made it work well was the thoughtful relationship between Harvey and Kate, which isn't based on physical attraction so much as it's based on the need to be loved. We don't get too much of that in romantic comedies these days. Even the entertaining "Definitely, Maybe" and "My Best Friend's Girl" were only committed to catering to younger audiences, which is a shame because the filmmakers missed some great opportunities to develop the characters at a more mature level. "Last Chance Harvey" gives its characters some degree of believability, and this is in spite of the story's formulaic elements. I greatly enjoyed this film, and I'm sure most audiences will also.

Kenpo Karate Larry Tatum Free Style Review

This is a straight forward explanation of the freestyle techniques taught by Ed Parker. Master Larry Tatum is a skilled teacher and this work shows it. I've tried to wrap myself around this subject and Master Tatum brings it home. Thank you Sir.

Kenpo Karate Larry Tatum Free Style Overview

This DVD features the Grand Master Larry Tatum, assisted by the Masters Luelmo (7 th grade) and Camacho (6 th grade), representatives of the LTKKA for Spain, Portugal and Italy. Grand Master Tatum breaks down the Kempo techniques in the Free Style system. These techniques have been selected for the trainee, so that they can learn the technique's structure gradually and understand the process of formulation. As with the techniques of self-defense, there are 4 basic ways to address the opponent in the fight, however, instead of assigning names to the techniques in the Freestyle system, letters and numbers are used to identify and establish an equation for the fighter. This formula will allow the student to learn changing and dynamic movements. In this DVD you can also find footage of a seminar in Madrid in 2004 featuring demonstration of some these techniques in real time.

What Would Jesus Do Review

Excellent message - how one person can change how a whole town lives by simply saying "What would Jesus do?" This movie is loosly based on the 1898 novel, "In His Steps: What would Jesus Do?" by Charles Sheldon. The names are the same, but the story takes a modern tone, but the valuable lesson is the same. A drifter, played by John Schneider is shunned by the community even the pastor of a dying church, played by Jim Gleason, tells him "I'm sorry that I can't help you." But the message the drifter brings to a church is "would Jesus act that way?" As church members start changing the way they do things from running their businesses to helping the less fortunate, the wave of love and goodness takes over the town even when a greedy, ruthless politician wants to take over.
This message is vital to the world in this day and age. Imagine what would happen if every Christian would think before acting and ask themselves "what would Jesus do in my place?

From Prada to Nada (2011) Review

This film appealed to me as a bilingual, and overall I found it to be lighthearted and a fairly fun watch with friends.
The good news is that the film is shot fairly well, especially with respect to real-deal scenes of East Los Angeles. I greatly enjoyed the music score, which ranged from classic mariachi songs to upbeat Salsa.
I was happy with the cast, and Adriana Barraza (the maid from Babel) steals every scene as aunt Aurelia Jimenez. Wilmer Valderrama is convincing (though cliche-chasing) as the cholo with a heart, and it's great to see him in something different than the "Fez" type characters.
The downside is that the film is a little light on laughs. There are a few laugh-out-loud moments, though they aren't frequent in this movie. There are definitely a few jokes and moments in the film that would be more funny to Spanish speakers, or at least anyone familiar with Mexican-American culture.
Camilla Belle is a solid actress, though I wasn't too sure about her being cast as the lead. Granted Belle's half-Brazilian in real life, but it was bizarre that the producers spray tanned her a nuclear orange color in order to "look the part" of a Mexicana.
Like plenty of rom-coms, From Prada to Nada is certainly predictable, although there were a few minor twists and turns along the way.
As a guy, I thought this was a lighthearted watch, and worth a rental. The ladies I watched it with (also Spanish-speakers) all loved it, and there were more than a couple "Awwwwww!" moments, plus some tears. Not the best romantic comedy I've seen in a long time, but definitely worth renting.

From Prada to Nada (2011) Overview

Nora and Mary only know the good life in Beverly Hills - shopping, posh parties, and more shopping - but they're in for a big shock when Daddy's fortune suddenly disappears. Thankfully, an aunt takes them under her wing but she lives on the other side of town. Laugh out loud as these princesses embark on the biggest adventure of their lives'without designer labels!

This DVD starts on of my favorite anime series. It begins an excelent story of self discovery, transformation, and friendship that reminds people how when ordinary people are put into extraordinary situation they can change in ways they never thought possible. This series is one that can be appriciated by most audiences. The characters are easily liked and can be related to most ordinary people in our world.
