Zyliss 4-in-1 Slicer and Grater Review
I just bought this after reading lots of Veggie Venture recipes that use a mandoline. I love it! I've used it for almost every meal I've prepared since buying it.PROS
* Blades are VERY sharp; will even slice tomatoes and celery!
* Slices paper thin - which I love for onions!
* Has four-pronged food pusher good for food at least an inch across (use plastic edge of pusher to finish the last slice)
* Rinses clean easily; no staining even with beets
* Stacks together to keep all blades with mandoline
* Feet stand on cutting board or grasp edge of bowl
* 2 grater blades (medium and small), and 2 slicer blades (thin and ultra thin)
* Relatively inexpensive, considering some mandolines cost over $100!
CONS
* Blades are VERY sharp (after several nicks, including fingernails, I sliced off the tip of my thumb - surgically clean cut! ) Actually, you don't want blades less sharp, but it seems important to point out as with most things the strongest point can be the weakest point under certain circumstances.
* Food pusher doesn't work well on small pieces, such as baby carrots (how I sliced my thumb...going superfast - by hand - making carrot slices one could see through!)
* Food pusher can seem to jam; though it's just running down a track, mine shows a little wear after a couple weeks
* If pusher slides passed the veg and you re-grip it, the veg gets lots of prong-punctures; would be better to have more prongs, closer together, and maybe not as thick or long?
* Grating seems harder than slicing...beets require focused pressure because grater slots are thin metal, not serrated or blade-honed
* Blades are fixed; you just choose one and that's it, but hey, it's inexpensive
TIPS
* Don't try to save the little blade protectors which I believe are part of the packaging. Instead, snap both blades onto the base for storing, then snap grater pieces and pusher on top to protect hands when rooting around for it (if you ever put it away since it's so handy!)
* To slice something round - like radishes, beets, even onions - run the veggie across the blade by hand once or twice to create a flat edge; then switch to the food gripper/pusher
* If you insist upon holding the food by hand, go very, very slowly and evaluate the distance of your hand from the blade with each slice, or review your insurance policy
* When you finish one food, turn mandoline over and remove bits stuck to the bottom
* Rinse parts immediately and drain dry
