Boss (1973) Review
fernando di leo was one of the best italian crime moviemakers. This was his best movie and you get a second well made movie in this set. Di leo highly influenced future filmakers like quentin tarantino among others. This is a bloody realistic tale of the scilian mafia and the constant betrayal and bloodshed that makes of crime gangs lives. After all most gangmembers of any gang are killed by their friends than their enemies. Pure greed and easy money leeds to a culture of killing and brutality and this movie has lots of both. And a early seventies free love girl that falls for henry di silvas character. The acting is first class and di leo could really bring out great performances from most actors. He would be applauded over here as a great director if he'd worked in the u.s.the films are italian but have subtitles if someone releases them over here they would use a dubbed version. This movie was successful in it's day and needs a good remastering and cleaning up from a company like no shame or blue underground. Once you discover the great italian crime and giallo (murder mystery horror films) you are entering into a world of excellent filmmaking that makes the 60's-80's shine with innovation and good exciting action. Il boss though stands as one of the very best movies ever made about the mafia and how italy was corrupted by this organization (to a greater degree in the past than now though). and not to be missed in this movie is richard conte as the the evil boss. He is
a cold monster who never shows his anger , he is a mask of civility that hides a bottomless pit of corruption. DI leo is dead but his works live on and they need a proper u.s. release.
