Disney Exclusive Scandalous John Review

SCANDALOUS JOHN is a wonderful, gentle, old-fashioned tale from Disney, which has finally seen release on a limited edition DVD. First off, the transfer to digital is quite good for a 1971 release, and this is the only way you'll ever see this film in its widescreen 2:35 format, which, by '71, Disney was using much less often. The color is muted but accurate, with very few artifacts. Sound is clear and clean, in the original mono. No special features, not even a trailer. Darn.
As to the film itself, the centerpiece is the Disney stalwart Brian Keith (TV's "Family Affair", THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL, THE WIND AND THE LION, WITH SIX YOU GET EGGROLL and so many more), who brings a gruff warmth to John McCanless, a modern rancher who has been so deeply affected by the death of his wife that he has retreated into a world of Wild West imagination. Or has he? At his side, as the Sancho Panza to his Don Quixote, rides Alfonso Arau (whom you have seen in ROMANCING THE STONE and USED CARS, but is more prominent as the director of A WALK IN THE CLOUDS, LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE and A PAINTED HOUSE). As McCanless' granddaughter Amanda, who is trying to understand and keep her grandfather safe and sane, is Michele Carey (veteran of many TV roles including "The F.B.I." and "The Six Million Dollar Man"). And rounding out the foursome is Rick Lenz (another TV veteran), very James Stewart-like in his role as Amanda's friend, who wants to be much more.
Also prominent in SCANDALOUS JOHN are Harry Morgan, Simon Oakland, and a very young John Ritter. The screenplay by Disney vets Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi, from Richard Gardner's novel, paints a portrait of an imaginative man, lost in the present, who finds strength and solace in the past, even if that past was never more than just a dream. The cinematography by Frank V. Phillips captures the vistas of the Southwest without letting them dominate the very small and personal story of John McCanless and Paco Martinez on their cattle drive (only one bull, but it's still a cattle drive) north to a city of gold and dreams. The direction by Disney and TV vet Robert Butler (THE COMPUTER WORE TENNIS SHOES, THE BAREFOOT EXECUTIVE, TV's "Star Trek", "Hogan's Heroes" and "Gunsmoke" in a long and varied career) is solid and heartfelt.
And did I mention the delicate score by Rod McKuen, which prominently features, of all things, a musical saw? Delightful.
It's so good to finally see SCANDALOUS JOHN get a DVD release.
