That Hamilton Woman Review

I had been looking for this movie for awhile, but first, could not find, then was very expensive. (There is also a Criterion Collection Version - but, I have to say - compared to my other Criterion Collection Movies - this one is a much better copy, great sound, good view (BW) and the print is exceptional!)
I first got interested in this movie when in England, and saw the statue of Lord Nelson in Trafalgar Square. (Unlike most people overseas, we - in the USA - have a lot of history to learn for a short amount of time in "our" country/USA; therefore, I don't know as much as I would like to about world history/activities, and like the movies which have histoy of other eras and about other countries, culture, etc. in them.)
THE BASIC PLOT: LADY Emma HAMMILTON is a woman, which is kind-of like the starting of the movie/book "Camille" - a small town girl (only Camille/Paris, while this is the 'UK)., with ambitions in Eurpoe, who - with her mother - goes to London from humble beginnings in the UK. Emma learns a lot of various skills, especially good for a woman, i.e. dancing, dressmaking/style-fashion, etc. and from all this grows up enough to be able (including her mother) to be with the "right" people, know how to converse, learns skills, etc., so she is not only able to be in a good social circle, but is VERY beautiful as well. (Movie starts with Lady Hamilton, a Lady by marriage, as an old woman caught for odd reason/s in jail as a "lady/night", telling her story when another same-type inmate asks her name, and she says it - when prodded for both names, the lady (and a few others there) laugh, and say "well, go ahead, we have nothing to do - tell us the story if you want to: I heard Lady Hamilton was a most beautiful woman".
SO THE STORY GOESS (w/out telling too much): Time period is the Napoleonic war/s. She (and mom) were invited to a palace in Vesuvius, Naples - UK territory). She then EMMA HAMILTON), is supposed to meet a Lord Hamilton's relative who had invited her -there - but does not show as he is called to war - whatever. They (moma-Emma) end up his houseguest. Sir William Hamilton, British Minister Plenipotentiary in Naples and a much older man, is a collector of many beautiful things, i.e. statues, paintings, etc. and he marries Lady (Emma) Hamilton as another one of them. This sets her up with the Queen, and her tastes, looks, etc. become a good tool to enliven this place, and the palace. She helps the Queen with her gowns, raising kids, etc. and even running the country - as the King is another older man, overeshausted, and really not running this "little" place w/out the knowledge, money, etc. from England.
9-11-1793, a fleet of ships slips into, many of them out far, in need of money, medical supplies, etc. and Nelson (not a Lord yet)in the ship "The Agamemnon", comes into the Bay of Naples and spent the night becalmed, allowing Post-Captain Horatio Nelson to watch the glow of a restless Vesuvius and writes that "nothing could be finer than the view" of the night - waiting for the wind to carry him into port. There an impatient Naples awaited the news of the war against revolutionary France, and King Ferdinand of Naples was so keen to have the despatches which Nelson carried that he had himself rowed out the next morning to meet the ship and hail this tangible proof that the British fleet was at hand. When asked for help, he is told by Nelson he will have to wait at least 5-10 days for help from the King (even to see him), and they cannot possibly expect the number of men, supplies, etc. they are asking for from the King. He makes the plans with a much disappointed/outraged Nelson, not near wht he was promised nor expected. (NOTE FROM THE WIKIPEDIA: England's involvement with Naples had come about through a treaty signed between England and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies on 12 July 1793. The terms of the alliance included a promise that the Neapolitan court would provide 6,000 men for service in the war against France. Nelson had been despatched by Lord Hood to organise the transfer of these men to Toulon where the British were blockading the French fleet and were about to occupy the city against the French Republican Army.Equally importantly, in view of later developments, Nelson would meet the Minister's second wife, Emma, (Lady Hamilton), whose machinations helped obtain the alliance and who, five years later would involve Nelson in a ménage à trois that would risk his reputation, which is the core of the movie: Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton's involvement, how she helped him and the British Royal Navy, Lord Nelson's victories, and finally - England defeating France and Napoleon in the end.
A few interesting "tidbits": Nelson and Emma fall in love, for it is she and her allliance with the Queen, especialy the first time they are in port, who gets to the Queen the first night, and the next day has all 6,000 troops, etc. ready and waiting for Nelwon to go to battle - which they won. (Not long after the victory, he came back to thank Lady Hamilton for her help, and needing more, again - she was able to supply it. Previously, she had been a dancer, the kind who did the "dance of the 7 veils", but it only added to her beauty and attraction/s with men. Her older husband kind-of considered her another piece of artwork like the rest of his "Trophies", mainly when people began to talk, and even under his nose he could see she and he were getting close (though, it was not flaunted THAT way - she got him what he wanted and needed when he needed/was promised to get it, and the men of the gov't there did or could not.)
Nearly each time either post-battle/help needed, etc., Nelson came back to Lady Hamilton. Nelson (by this time much affected physically by the battles), she "took care of him", until able to rejoin the fighting in good shape, but a lot of gossip went around about this; however, if it were not for her, he would not have received the help he got nor the help he was promised, the care (may have died and/or lost battle/s), etc.. After their triumphs (usually led by him), and a number of battles later -when it seemed to end, they (the UK fleet/soldiers) came back to London to a crowd who praised and gave a parade to (the now) SIR Lord Nelson, while wife (now LADY Nelson, and her father (and their growing son) had come to see him after years of waiting, knowing about the "gossip", but when Nelson did not show up for the parade straight from the ship, his family (though treated very well by the gov't), were quite upset. Later, Nelson introduced them to Lady H.and her mom, while his wife made plans to get him away from her, which were successful.
He became a member of Britain's parliment (or the equlvalent at the time), and was included on plans/stratgies the still raging Napoleonic goings on at other countries, UK/misc. colonies, etc. Napoleon wanted a 2-year agreement for peace with UK, which the politicians were agreeable to, but NELSON said was only a ruse to "get his water battalions, and other war necessities together" and would not agree to this pact. He was proved right, and (without the loss of an eye/1st battle, leg/2nd battle, etc., was still at the helm now with his son there, too - now hearing and seeing the relationship between his Dad and Lady H (V.Leigh).
Some other highlights: she became pregnant with his baby after her husband dies, and due to the ravages of war mainly on Naples, she is now broke - due to fighting around their castle she lost all his "Treasures". She takes a flat ourside the city of UK, lays low, and raises her son; so basically, she has lost a lot, (gained a son - but will not let NELSON know). Meanwhile, Nelson at war while his wife makes sure nothing gets to him from Lady Emma Hamilton. Later, he goes to see her, finds she has a son from him, and by "snooping" finds out what a mess she is in financialy (seeing many envelopes looking like letters - from lovers he thinks?/takes them from her when they are all bills). Also, she is outcast socially in the UK due to his wife, others, etc. spreading the tale/s around of their relationship - not the military one - but, their love. One of his faithful soldiers takes him to her, he finds those letters, which is how he finds out her status and wants to come to the rescue.
The movie is very detailed and interesting - which made me look it up on the database to see how closely it matched the movie (V.Leigh was as beautiful, if not moreso, as the original Lady Hamilton)....and, this all was a very interesting real story on the way/s wars are fought and won (or lost). It is a great movie - one anyone would want. The two stars (Leigh and Olivier) are married at this point in real life, and it also makes for a good movie (even think he was Sir Laurence Olivier now).
Anyone who has been, lives in other countries, is or has visited the UK and the "square", and doesn't know the history or is planning a trip to England and Trafalgar Square, this is a good movie to have, as it will be interesting after as well - one must see the statue there and knowing the background of it is even more exciting. (Impress others with your knowledge/movie!)
I felt it was a well-made movie, with good action scenes, as well as some comedic scenes to lighten up the movie via showing the fun in their relatinship, which made for Nelson to go into battle with his spirits uplifted.
I highly recommend this movie, especially for the price!
