If You Knew Susie (1948) Review
Cantor sort of translates his career onto film in a most delightful and theatrical way. His vaudeville background reverberates through-out in a very easy, slap-stick, Broadway-musical-Major-Motion-Picture that evokes the middle-late 1940's as more than a simple "homage". The unencumbered show-biz-iness of the piece is what that audence was used to, wanted to see and enjoyed, when it was done up as well as this one. Added to the inherent treats is the marvelous Joan Davis (whose daughter was one of Sweet Sue's syncopated band members with Marilyn Monroe in "Some Like It Hot", and had played Beverly, Joan's sister on "I Married Joan", Davis' 1950's TV show ). Joan sings and dances with Cantor (executing a fabulous forward cartwheel during her first number with Cantor), and get's off some wonderful wide-eyed wise-cracks, as she co-stars with great confidence and comic style. Cantor wrote it as the vehicle for everyone in the movie, and all the other actors get showcased, which goes to prove how generous Mr. Cantor really was. Ya gotta see it!If You Knew Susie (1948) Overview
