Dragon Ball Z: Dragon Box Six (2011) Review
Dragon Ball Z: Dragon Box Six continues the phenomenal work FUNimation has put into the DBZ Dragon Boxes already released. For those that have already seen the previous Dragon Boxes from FUNi, you pretty much know what you're getting into as this continues the same release style with the same great audio/video options. Fear not, FUNi hasn't done anything differently with this box than they have with previous sets and I have no reason to believe they'll change anything with box sever either. This collection picks up where Box Five dropped off and includes episodes 210-250 which includes the Maijin Boo saga portion of the series.
Video-
Wow. Just as with previous box sets, this set includes the video remastered in Japan by Toei, from the original 16 mm prints. Just as has been the case with previous Dragon Boxes, the video is SLIGHTLY brighter than the Japanese original and most people chalk this up to the slightly different black reference levels between Japanese and USA NTSC standards. If you don't like it, just adjust the picture on your TV to accommodate. Framing of the image is also slightly different than the Japanese Dragon Box as well. What this means from a presentation perspective is that it isn't EXACTLY the same as the Japanese release in regards to color and how the image sits on the screen, however the color can be corrected on your TV and the different framing just changes where the black boarders appear, which no one will really notice anyway.
Colors are clear and there doesn't seem to be any video anomalies to be seen. It's as perfect a video quality as one would expect.
Even with seven episodes a disc, there doesn't seem to be any compression artifacts to be seen either.
Great video. 5 stars.
Audio-
Included is the original Japanese dub, in Mono, as it was originally recorded and presented on Japanese TV. It has a slightly higher compression applied to it over the Japanese original Dragon Box, however what the Japanese box had was really overkill for a Mono soundtrack. All of the Japanese audio is intact and sounds nothing short of great (for what it is).
Also included is the 5.1 English dub as found on the previous US Dragon Boxes. This is the dub that included the original Japanese music. As with previous sets, the English localized music is NOT included in this set. For completists this will be a disappointment, so if you were looking for this dub, you won't be happy with box six (or any of the first 5 sets for that matter).
The Japanese language audio is the DEFAULT language option on these discs.
5 Stars. For those looking for the localized music, probably 3 stars
Subtitles-
For those watching the Japanese language version and want English subtitles, the discs include, as expected, optional subtitles that are on by default.
As best as I can tell with my Japanese language understanding is that the subtitles pretty accurately represent what is being said, so it's a mostly literal translation, which is great.
5 stars for subtitles.
Packaging-
As with previous boxes, box six comes with a sturdy chip board box. I'm not seeing any of the previously reported issues with peeling artwork, so that's a bonus, but I didn't experience that with any of my previous boxes either.
Once again we have two digipak "book" style boxes that hold 3 discs each. The only complaint I have, as I have had with previous releases, is the way they are packed require you to remove one disc to get to the disc below it. I wish you could easily remove all of the discs, but such is life with the way they resized the boxes from the Japanese originals (Japanese box set is oversized and doesn't easily fit on a DVD shelf; these are resized to fit on a standard DVD shelf, which is really nice).Packaging gets 5 stars as well.
Extras-
The included book is again a translation of the book that came with the Japanese Dragon Box and includes only information pertinent to the episodes and characters found in this box set. Once box seven is released, we should have the entire Japanese book translated (I'm hoping they include the interviews in the last box that were part of the original Japanese Dragon Box... please FUNi!? Pretty please?)
There aren't any video extras, though I don't believe the original Dragon Box included much in that regards either.
Extras, 5 stars for the book, 3 stars total due to lack of video extras (though for me this is not important at all, given the lack of extras on the original Japanese box)Over all-
Once again FUNimation offers up something that DBZ fans had only been dreaming of for years here in the USA; a release faithful to the original Japanese DBZ releases, including the remastered and uncut audio/video. For those fans, this is a continuation of the dream.
For completionists, this may not be the be all, end all given the lack of the original English dub w/ localized music, so those fans will continue to be disappointed.
Great release for a series that deserves a great release. Highly recommended.
